Form Follow Function

Form follows function and function follows form are two different terms that have opposite meaning with each other. Many people have argued about these terms and they have different stands and reasons. These terms represents how a person create something and the way they create.

Form follows function, basically means that function comes before form. In my opinion, this principle most probably apply on modern agricultural and industrial design. They must think of what is the function of the building before they decide how it looks like. This principle mostly applies on the situation where function is more important than its appearance. Just like our clothes, they are suppose to keep us warm or comfortable, therefore they are meant to be designed to suite its function. If the clothes are designed based on their forms, maybe they will be not functioning as we want it to be. Maybe their forms will be affecting their main function.

In function follows form, which means form comes before function, mostly applies on things that meant to be decorative instead of functioning. In my opinion, decorative stuff like sculpture, characters figures and etc are build based on form before function comes in. This is because they are build for what they meant to, to decorate, to enchant beauty.
